This doesn't happen when I take my Mac from my home network to my work network or to many other secured networks that I've used repetitively, and the network that gives me troubles is one that I use at least weekly. The only way I've found to get past this is to restart the Mac. Typically, the WiFi Chevron in the Menu Bar fills in with the SSID in question checked in the dropdown menu, but web pages will not open (especially the dialog to which I need to respond to continue), and all my email accounts in Mac Mail.app are displayed as offline. If this even after we opted out of any analytics, but then again, this wouldn't be the first time software developers get caught doing something they're not supposed to do.Īny idea what's might be going on or how to disable this behavior?Ĭomputer can connect to an open SSID, but not establish an internet connection I have a 2016 15.4" Touch Bar MacBook Pro running macOS 10.14.6 (fully updated) that sometimes cannot establish an internet connection with open SSIDs that require acquiescence of "conditions of service" (but no password) to establish the connection. So basically it tries to connect to the first server, then it waits, when it does not get a reply, it tries the second server, and so forth. I found out that Big Sur is trying to contact apple servers because that's what it shows in our firewall's logs. Sometimes the app does not even open at all after bouncing for over 10 minutes. The culprit was the same Max Headroom impersonator, this time speaking with distorted audio. That same night, at about 11:20 pm, the signal of local PBS station WTTW was interrupted during an airing of the Doctor Who serial Horror of Fang Rock. Roan then proceeded to restart his report of the day's Chicago Bears game, which had been interrupted by the intrusion. Upon returning to the airwaves, WGN sports anchor Dan Roan commented, "Well, if you're wondering what's happened, so am I", and joked that the computer running the news "took off and went wild". The entire intrusion lasted for about 20 seconds and was cut off when engineers at WGN changed the frequency of the signal linking the broadcast studio to the station's transmitter atop the John Hancock Center. The individual rocks erratically in front of a rotating corrugated metal panel that mimicked the real Max Headroom's geometric background effect accompanied by a staticky and garbled buzzing sound. Home viewers' screens went black for about fifteen seconds, before footage of a person wearing a Max Headroom mask and sunglasses is displayed. The first intrusion took place at 9:14 pm during the sports segment of WGN-TV's The Nine O'Clock News. WGN-TV A recording of the WGN-TV intrusion Signal intrusion īoth Max Headroom broadcast signal intrusion incidents took place on local Chicago television stations on the night of Sunday, November 22, 1987. Ī criminal investigation conducted by the Federal Communications Commission in the immediate aftermath of the intrusion could not find the people responsible, and despite many unofficial inquiries and much speculation over the ensuing decades, the culprits have yet to be positively identified. At that point, the hijackers ended the pirate transmission, and normal programming resumed after a total interruption of about 90 seconds. The video concluded with the masked figure’s bare buttocks being spanked by a woman with a flyswatter while yelling "They're coming to get me!", with the woman responding "Bend over, bitch!" as the figure was crying and screaming. With nobody on duty at the affected tower, this signal takeover was more sustained, and the masked figure could be heard making reference to the real Max Headroom's advertisements for New Coke, the animated TV series Clutch Cargo, WGN sportscaster Chuck Swirsky, "Greatest World Newspaper nerds", and other seemingly unrelated topics. The second incident occurred about two hours later during PBS member station WTTW's broadcast of the Doctor Who serial Horror of Fang Rock. This interruption went on for almost 17 seconds before engineers at WGN were able to regain control of their broadcast tower. Unlike the later intrusion, the only sound was a loud buzz. Like the later signal intrusion, it featured a person wearing a mask swaying erratically in front of a swiveling corrugated metal panel, apparently meant to resemble Max Headroom's animated geometric background. The first incident took place during the sports segment of independent TV station WGN-TV's 9:00 p.m. The Max Headroom signal hijacking occurred on the night of November 22, 1987, when the television signals of two stations in Chicago, Illinois, were hijacked, briefly sending a pirate broadcast of an unidentified person wearing a Max Headroom mask and costume to thousands of home viewers. Tigres will become the third ever since to make it to a Copa Libertadores final since Mexican clubs were invited to take part in the competition in 1998. This run included beating Universitario of Bolivia in the Round of 16 and Emelec of Ecuador in the quarterfinals. The Tigres qualified for this final for the first time in their history having beaten Internacional of Porto Alegre of Brazil after losing the first leg in Brazil, 2-1 and winning the second leg at home, 3-1. However, once more, River managed to force a draw in those five minutes to qualify to the knockout stage. The Mexicans rested some players and were 2-0 up with less than five minutes to go. In Mexico, the Tigres were already qualified for the knockout stage, while River were looking for every point they could get, with the risk of possible elimination looming. In Buenos Aires in early March, the home defence could not cope with the pace of Ecuadorian Joffre Guerron (who cannot even get into the starting line up now because of the new incorperations of the squad) had to dig deep to come back and force a 1-1 draw. They were together in Group Six, where both clashes ended in a draw - but there was no doubt that the Tigres were the better side. However, this time it will be for the biggest prize of all of South America, as the first leg will be played at the Estadio Universitario, otherwise known as '' El Volcán'' (" The Volcano"). The Tigres of Mexico will take on River Plate of Argentina for the third time in this year's edition of the Copa Libertadores, having met twice in their own group, home and away. I was looking at the AI image generators themselves, not tools built on top of them. Tools that have you upload a dozen of your photos and then spit out AI-generated portraits are fun (and normally built using Stable Diffusion), but they aren't the kind of general-purpose image generators I was considering. I was looking for apps that allowed you to generate AI images from a text prompt. The four biggest names-DALL♾ 2, Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, and Adobe Firefly-are all on this list for different reasons, but they're also the only apps that really met my criteria for inclusion for two reasons: Since they're such a recent development, there isn't a huge amount of great AI image creators to choose from. Even the original DALL♾ was more of a fun novelty than a world-shaking revelation when it launched in 2021. The technology underlying them was incredibly cool and impressive, at least to research scientists, but the images they could output were underwhelming. There's a reason that AI image generators have become incredibly popular over the past 18 months: before that, they were pretty bad. For more details on our process, read the full rundown of how we select apps to feature on the Zapier blog. We're never paid for placement in our articles from any app or for links to any site-we value the trust readers put in us to offer authentic evaluations of the categories and apps we review. We spend dozens of hours researching and testing apps, using each app as it's intended to be used and evaluating it against the criteria we set for the category. It's kind of like looking up at a cloudy sky, finding a cloud that looks kind of like a dog, and then being able to snap your fingers to keep making it more and more dog-like.Īll of our best apps roundups are written by humans who've spent much of their careers using, testing, and writing about software. In essence, they start with a random field of noise and then edit it in a series of steps to match their interpretation of the prompt. The latest generation of AI image generators do that using a process called diffusion. The next step is to actually render the AI-generated image. Once this is done, you have an AI that can interpret almost any prompt-though there is a skill in setting things up so it can do so accurately. By allowing it to process near-countless images, it learns what dogs, the color red, Vermeers, and everything else are. Billions of image-text pairs are used to train a neural network (basically, a very fancy computer algorithm modeled loosely on the human brain) on what things are. Most AI image generators work in a pretty similar way. Seriously, the only real limits are your imagination, the AI image generator's ability to comprehend your prompt, and any content filters put in place to stop bad actors flooding the internet with AI-generated violence or other NSFW content. I made this with DALL♾ 2 using the prompt "an impressionist oil painting of a Canadian man riding a moose through a forest of maple trees" This opens up some wild possibilities, since your prompt can be anything from "an impressionist oil painting of a Canadian man riding a moose through a forest of maple trees" to "a painting in the style of Vermeer of a large fluffy Irish wolfhound enjoying a pint of beer in a traditional pub" or "a photograph of a donkey on the moon." The best AI image generatorsĭALL♾ 2 for an easy-to-use AI image generatorĭreamStudio (Stable Diffusion) for customization and control of your AI imagesįirefly (Photoshop) for integrating AI-generated images into photosĪll these AI image generators take a text prompt and then turn it-as best they can-into a matching image. It's worth taking a few hours to play around with one of these text-to-image AI apps-even just so you can appreciate them from a technical perspective. Instead, I'll focus on the fact that these AI image generators can now produce fascinating results from written prompts. I'm going to try to avoid the thorny discussions around artistic merit and copyright infringement in training data. That's about as long as anyone realistically has been thinking about these tools, and it's really exciting for me to see how far they've come. I've been writing about AI image generators since Google Deep Dream in 2015. Like Gary, I have quite a few accounts on it, and it works great. However, downloading malware is not a danger for Mac users, since there is no auto-launching, and (unlike with Windows) applications can’t be sent as single files. I also have a “real” job working for a giant company (20+ thousand employees) -most of whom use Windows 10 / Microsoft Office. #Alternative spamsieve windows windows 10 As a result, for that side, I use Microsoft Outlook (installed by my employer). I could keep all of my email in Outlook, too, but I’d rather have it separate. It works beautifully, it incorporates a calendar and address book seamlessly, and the search is great too. They also have an iOS version that is every bit as polished as the desktop version. I don’t know if it can be purchased separately, but as Microsoft offers Office 365 for up to six people for under $100/year, we have that for my wife and kids. Half are on Macs, half use Windows - Microsoft doesn’t care how many devices or what types of devices the software is installed on. Their only limit is the number of people that use it. Thanks - it’s a neat app but possibly a little lightweight for my needs. Yes, I know where you’re coming from on this one. Spark has some really great features but it’s also lacking in some really obvious ones too. The two biggest missing features from spark for me are I have workarounds for the things I found it lacks, and while on the face of it my workarounds ,right seem OTT, they slot in well with how I do things in general. My solution is as follows, but first I should explain my setup. On my main machine I have Spark with all my email accounts. On a 2nd machine, I run Apple mail, also with all my mail accounts added. On the 2nd machine Mail is setup to move s copy of everything to a local folder, this is in effect my local archive/backup of all the mail I get. As well as archiving all mail this machine also runs all the rules I have in place, plus it has various spam filters setup. The idea is the 2nd machine (with Apple Mail) sorts all my incoming mail, removing spam, sorting into folders, and archiving. This means that by the time the mail hits the main machine (and all my devices) all the hard work is done (by Mail), so Spark just has to handle the basics. In this setup Spark is in effect purely the front end, with Mail on the 2nd machine doing all the grunt work. I realise this sounds completely overkill, but I’ve always had my email setup over two machines for archiving purposes, so it was only a bit more to add in the spam and filtering stuff.ĭoing it this way means almost nothing get’s to me via the main machine or devices that I don’t actually want.ĭepending on how you do things Geoff, if you like the features that Spark has, something similar might work for you to overcome it’s short-comings. I guess I should add that the main reason for going with Spark was because as said (and it was he who put me onto it) 2Do and Spark integrate really well. So I’ve stuck with it, despite it’s failings. #Alternative spamsieve windows windows 10.PowerMail only supports SpamSieve with POP accounts.
