Last year Amazon started to deliver the Fire to Europe but only this week has it finally started shipping to Australia - almost two years after launching in North America. Meanwhile competitors like Samsung's Galaxy Tab have come a long way in terms of price and performance, while Kobo has also moved into the tablet space. By the middle of 2012 Australians could pick up the Nexus 7 for AU$249 and suddenly missing out on the Kindle Fire didn't seem so painful. Google's Nexus program really threw a spanner in the works, delivering quality devices like the Nexus 7 tablet - breaking new ground in terms of price points and performance. It followed up the Fire with the Fire HD tablet, offering a 1280x800 display, but the problem for Amazon was that technological progress was finally outpacing its international release schedule. As usual Amazon focused on the domestic US market and dragged its feet on international expansion. Once again Australians looked on with envy, forced to make do with the clunky and expensive first-gen Samsung Galaxy Tab - stuck with a breathtaking $999 price tag in Australia. Here was a top-shelf Android tablet at bargain basement pricing - subsidised by Amazon's economies of scale and the fact it knows it will make money on content and services. Amazon unveiled a game-changer back in 2011 when it released a 7-inch Android tablet with an amazing US$199 price tag. ![]()
